AS CRAZY AS it sounds the British hard rock scene during the early 1980s was fractured to the point where virtually the entire musical spectrum was conveniently condensed under just one umbrella; the NWOBHM. Everyone from the heaviest of acts to those of a more sensitive nature were rubbing shoulders and getting along like a house on fire. A great example of this even handed bonhomie was an extensive British tour headlined by decibel darlings Iron Maiden who handed over the coveted support slot to melodic harbingers Grand Prix; a bizarre yet for the time a perfectly plausible pairing. With two previous albums tucked under their belt Grand Prix had secured a reputation as one of the UK's best melodic rock outfits wielding a sound half borrowed from the grandest of American acts such as Kansas and Journey yet underpinned by a certain British earthiness. It was with this gravitas that Grand Prix, newly signed to the Chrysalis label, recorded their third album produced by Status Quo alumni John Eden in the Scottish Highlands.
Originally issued in 1983, 'Samurai' is without doubt one of the greatest pomp rock albums ever recorded by a British band. Boasting gilt edged melodies and boasting a batch of songs that would not be out of place on a multiplatinum Styx album, the effect is utterly spellbinding. Oh, and look out for vocalist Robin McAuley, a voice of pure delight.
